Before building development, I must have a concept, so I did some conceptual research. My theme is geometry, so I diffused topology from the theme of geometry, Mobius belt, Klein bottle, etc., and finally decided to use the big theme of geometry as my concept. In conceptual research, I developed topology from geometry, which inspired my thirst for topology. I didn’t try to use topology in this design because I didn’t think I was ready for this huge challenge. In the next project, I will try to design more creative buildings.

After that, I did some material research. These are all materials related to sustainable construction. After screening for its characteristics and subject requirements, I ultimately chose wood. But I also learned a lot of knowledge in this survey.

 

This week, we started the U12 Pavilion. We should work with partners, but sometimes we have to work alone. First of all, we need to do location research for pavilion. The area of pavilion cannot exceed 300 square meters. We have three main locations to choose from, Jesus Green, Midsummer Public Area and Parker park. With the help of our partners, we studied the advantages and disadvantages of all these locations together.

When I do location research, I always remind myself to pay attention to humanities, and design is to serve people. Therefore, the result of my research is to do a project to provide warmth for sanitation workers and homeless people. Of course, everyone can rest and have fun in this gazebo, but I hope this gazebo can not only serve the young people in Cambridge, but also provide more help for more people in need. In the end,  I decided to use Jesus Park as the construction site. So I found accurate satellite maps and daily flow charts from Google Park. Then I found a 1: 2000 accurate map on the city council website. I also analyzed the differences between the three sites. For example, midsummer is characterized by a large number of livestock in this park, and the area is relatively large, but the flow of people is relatively sparse compared to the other two parks.

Studying architecture is fascinating, and for me, architecture is a combination of art, technology and science. For a more profound meaning, architecture is based on professional knowledge and eventually is a manifestation of human care. For example, one interesting phenomenon I found in most public buildings in the UK, such as schools, is that doors are normally pushed to open instead of being pulled. I was told that the reason is that this design is more efficient for people to survive in fires. This case reveals humanity in building design, which puts humans’ needs into priority. That is why, in my view, excellent architectural design is not limited to the form and visual performance of a building. Other elements, such as technology, functions, and humanity, should also be taken into consideration.

I am always interested in design. Before I made my decision to study architecture, I had some extracurricular courses for fashion design and interior design during my gap year in China, where I studied sketching and painting. This experience cultivated my artistic appreciation and aestheticism. Also, at times, my father took me with him when negotiating with his clients, during which I am gradually familiar with the procedures of the projects in architecture and interior design. Moreover, I am preparing for my portfolio for university application, during which I really obtain tremendous satisfaction and accumulate knowledge in design. Every project for me is a new challenge, and my own design style is gradually being developed and formed during the process of my design for this portfolio.

This year, I am studying my UAL extended diploma course at CSVPA. In the 2-year study, I have learned perspective drawing for architecture and interior design. Meanwhile, I also applied what I have learned to a project which was a design for my school’s artistic exhibition. I met challenges during my own design; for example, I made mistakes in the location research, leading to the wrong data in my floor plan and failure of model making. Caution and discretion are significant in architectural design. Design in architecture also suggests the designer’s own understanding and solution to some critical social problems. Simultaneously, my project of interior design on global warming deepens my understanding of the causes and effects of global warming. After sufficient information gained from Dezeen and Archidaily, I learned many innovative design concepts and eco-friendly materials that can be applied to future design in order to alleviate global warming.

Technology and innovation make it possible for what we used to consider as fantasy and illusion. I have this vision that in the future, cutting-edge technology could be increasingly applied into interior design or architecture, which could change people’s life completely, similar to what the advent of the Internet has done to revolutionize people’s life. Actually, many high-tech companies have already been exploring this area. Therefore, my future pursuit is to combine advanced technology, such as AI, with my architectural design or interior design to solve the most urgent problems the world is facing.

 

3, The major I applied is Architecture. At the beginning, I applied for this major because my father had a related business that could help me with my future career. And I was love the modern architecture around the world, I really like to travel and visit characteristic buildings in different cities. The future employment opportunities, I think architecture design employment is good in China. After graduation, we can work in interior design companies, architectural institutes, real estate companies and other places. To be honest, it is precisely this point that I chose to major in architecture. When I first studied art and design, I loved fashion design. However, it is well known that this major is relatively expensive, and it is difficult to find a graduation job in China. It is a design that is relatively partial to an artist. And because my mother just gave birth to a sister who was 18 years younger than me last year, considering that I would have to assume certain responsibilities for my family in the future, I gave up fashion design and eventually chose an architectural design related to the business at home. However, when I was exposed to architectural design, I was very obsessed with it. This is a profession I love. Every time I see a very avant-garde design, I will be very excited.

In this week，I did some researches for starting the sustainable building project. Also，my paternal and I completed question interview and made an diagram of the data.

However，I paid more attentions in the research，that because I remembered Nancy said the researches are really important，so I decided to use a few days to complete it. Since now，I had made 7 A3 pages of digital researches. I made them by using photoshop. And searched the informations from some websites which are related to sustainable building in Google.

In previous research, I spent a lot of energy and time studying the standards that represent companies in sustainable buildings in each country. I learned many examples of sustainable buildings built by construction companies around the world, which deepened my impression of sustainable building characteristics and laid a good foundation for future design and development.
There is one place I can do better when doing sustainable building research. After completing research on sustainable building standards in various countries, I should conduct an in-depth study of BREEAM in the UK, and then improve the existing sustainable building projects in Cambridge and the local cultural fit. In future investigations, I will avoid such problems and make the content of the investigation closer to the actual situation of the project, so that the logic and content are more clear and specific.

In this week，we started to do our new project——sustainable pavilion. In this project，we had pots of proces，so we made a schedule during the weekend. Also，we made our company logo and business card from Monday to Friday. My pattern is Vincent，we decided to use LESS as our company name. During the period，I made research of business card at the begging. Then，I tried to using garbage to make the logo，which related with the theme，eco-friendly. After that，I lay out them in one A3 page，as what I did before，analyzing them and show the development of ideas. However，When I was doing the last part of business card，I made some mistakes. I had experienced three times of printing final outcomes，but I can figure out the current size. That made me confused. Finally，my pattern had printed out the business card. Because we had decided two final logo respectively，so we arranged one of them for the cover，and the other one at the back. The most interesting thing was we arranged our WeChat QR code on the business card. In the future，I will try to make research at the beginning. Because we made a wrong log before started to do logo research. I will remember that NANCY said，always do research first when you are doing the works.
