Design Rationale
There is a group of people that are neglected by everyone – the cleaners, who work so hard in the terrible working environment for very long hours per day. They wandering in the city. However, their journey is not pleasant I think, because of the terrible working environment and lack of rest point. I once had an experience helping sanitation workers. I remember it was getting up at four in the morning and walking around every corner of the city, I saw many busy sanitation workers. They work hard in cold climates. I joined them that day and helped them clean the city. After a few hours, I deeply felt their work are really hard, so I hope that my design can help them in the future. Therefore this project – sustainable pavilion, for Cambridge citizens, and trying to provide to cleaners a comfortable rest area with relatively low cost so that they could rest, heat their meals, store their tools and etc. At the same time, this pavilion would also be a place for the convenience of the citizens, standing on the pedestrian as infrastructure. To make the most use of this pavilion. The design was inspired by geometry. I want to create an irregular geometric small building. Considering that we need to use environmentally friendly materials, I chose wood. But actually, from a styling perspective, I think white and black are good choices. it is designed to be separable and flexible. Each paticles uncertakes a single function individually. On the other hand, it could be transformed to be a complete suite as a whole, so that this pavilion could be fit into every corner in the urban context. Each module can full opened and stretched to access maximum sunlight and ventilation. Also the great views is accessible. It could be well-fitted in the city part or anywhere with great views. The module also can partially open to ensure the privacy of the users and access the great view at the same time. It is suitable in relatively busy pedestrian. The modules can be arranged to form a partially surrounded outer space, especially suit for small-sized parties and meetings.
Reflection and Evaluation
Reflection and Evaluation
During the study of this project, I learned more deeply about the various sections of architectural design. For example, in the previous research, I spent a lot of efforts and time investigating the standards of representative companies in sustainable buildings in each country. I learned many examples of sustainable buildings built by construction companies around the world, which deepened the impression of the characteristics of sustainable buildings in my mind and laid a good foundation for my later design development.
There is one place I can do better when doing sustainable building research. After completing the research on sustainable building standards in various countries, I should conduct an in-depth study of the company BREEAM in the United Kingdom, and then refine the existing projects of sustainable buildings in the city of Cambridge and the fit of the local cultural background to sustainable buildings. In future surveys, I will avoid such problems, and bring the survey content closer to the actual situation of the project, so that the logic and content will be more clear and concrete.
When I doing the location research, I always remind myself to pay attention to the humanities, and design is serving to people. So the result of my research this time is to do a project to give warmth to sanitation workers and homeless people. Of course, everyone can come to rest and play in this pavilion, but I hope this pavilion can not only serve the young citizens of Cambridge, but also more To help people in need at the grassroots level!
Elevation and section make me feel a little awkward, I spent more time in this part because of computer problems. However, I think I can now skillfully make the technical drawing of these two parts. In the future learning process, I think many problems will be readily solved, and the efficiency of drawing will be higher.
In this development, I made many attempts. For example, using the method of dots, lines, and surfaces, irregularly drawing geometric shapes of different shapes, and then drawing them from 2D to 3D with a sense of space, so as to better present the architectural form in my mind. After using sketch up to make modeling, I tried to make my renderings. After rendering, I used Photoshop to modify the scene. However, there are some small details that I didn’t grasp very well. For example, there is a picture that I did not make a shadow for the building products, and there is still some deviation in the perspective. But, when I was making the next picture, I avoided these problems and produced a rendering that I was satisfied with. In the concept research, I developed topology from geometry, which triggered my desire for topological architecture. I didn’t try to using topology in this design because I don’t think I am ready to meet this big challenge. In the next project, I will try my best to design more creative buildings.
During the model making process, some problems occurred. The school’s 3d printer did not help me print my model at the end. So I contacted several 3D printing companies in Cambridge and London, but the results were not ideal. Their price were too high, and one even cost £ 300. In anxiety, I chose to buy handmade materials, while doing it by myself, while looking for a manufacturer in China to help me print the model and take pictures for me. This experience gave me a lot of pressure before the deadline, but it also gave me experience an opportunity to deal with different manufacturers. During the communication process, I needed to control the time, distance, model size and price.
In my opinion, the storage of this knowledge is crucial to my future study career and work. This will be my personal understanding of architecture, and I believe it will be a good start. With the attention and investigation of architecture, I deeply appreciate to their subconscious understanding of construction changed, and for a variety of building types, with a more professional understanding. For example, I really like Zaha Hadid’s architectural design, so I did a lot of research on her architectural design, and I learned a lot of new professional terms, such as nonlinear design, topological architecture, parametric design, and so on. These knowledge reserves are in my mind and have expanded my knowledge of architecture. I think that with these deeper understandings of architecture, I may try to brainstorm from such a large concept next time I do a project, instead of being clueless when I do concept development this time. I think the biggest gain is not what kind of appearance I made this time, but that in the process of studying and investigating at each stage, my knowledge of architecture has reached a new starting point. If I started researching and learning about these things when I was in foundation, I believe that it is laying the seeds for future learning. just like I read a book about artificial intelligence a year ago, which broaden my horizon and made me more clear about the direction of future learning.
In conclusion,I spent a lot of effort on this project, and it was a breakthrough and a challenge for myself. However, I am ready to face the next challenge. I am looking forward to the start of the next project. I will continue to work hard anyway.

WEEK10 U10
This week is the last week of the project, except for printing 3d models, I have everything ready. However, my model printed something unexpected. . .On Monday, I asked nissan to print the model for me. He said he was busy and asked me to find him the next day. So I went to workshop on Thursday morning to print the model. Then I gave the file to him.
When I saw the model on Saturday, I found that it had not been successfully printed, and the school workshop had been closed.
So I tried to contact the 3d printing company outside, but they were off for the weekend.
I also tried to do it by hand, but failed, the school cabinets were closed, and my materials were limited. Then I contacted a 3d printing company in London, and they told me it would take two to three days to print it, and the price was very high.

I then contacted a 3d printing company in Cambridge, but his price was as high as £300.
Finally, I contacted the 3d printing factory in China (cos is much cheaper) and communicated with them to print the model and take a set of photos to me, so as to ensure that I can hand in my homework on time.
At the same time, I also got in touch with my tutor, who learned of my situation and told me that I would put photos of the unsuccessful model in my sketchbook and blog, and then explain what happened. She told me that the accident of the model would not affect my final grade. We decided to redo the model at assessment week.
WEEK9 U12
After modeling with sketch up, I started experimenting with rendering. After rendering, I modified the scene using Photoshop. However, there are some small details I am not sure about. For example, there is a picture, I did not make a shadow for the building product, but there is still some deviation in perspective. However, when I was making the next picture, I avoided these problems and made a rendering that I was satisfied with.

This is a rendering of each side of the model. I used photoshop to put some little black people next to the building to make the scene more vivid and the building more vivid. This pavilion benefits all Cambridge citizens, who can rest and play here. When I was doing an on-site investigation, I found that the sanitation workers in Cambridge were very hard and had nowhere to hide from the cold. Not only that, I also see many homeless people wandering in the cold winter, and this pavilion can serve as their refuge. The movable panels on the sides create possibilities for the use of the pavilion. When the board is closed, the module can be used as a privacy room. On the other hand, when the display panel is opened, the display panel can be used as a retail store, warehouse, or meeting point. The design of the table is also versatile. When a module is split, it can be split into two. However, when modules are tiled into one, two tables can be combined into a larger table. The bed is foldable. When the cleaners need to rest or take a nap, they can lie on the bed. When they raised the plank, the room could be used elsewhere where more space was needed.
WEEK8 U12
I need to make a series of technical drawings using proper proportions and paper sizes A3 or A2. These should include plans, elevations and sections. All technical drawings shall be made on tracing paper using title boxes and keys, and shall be accurate and accurate. To do this, I used sketch-up and printed technology DWGS to scale. The elevations and sections made me feel a little embarrassed because I spent more time on them because of the computer problem. But I think I can now skillfully make the technical drawings of these two parts. In the future learning process, I think many problems will be readily solved, and the efficiency of drawing will be higher.
This is my experiment. My materials are steel wire, pliers and silk stockings.
The idea came from the art I saw at Tate modern. By twisting different forms of wire to support different forms of socks, from the shape of the wire to the surface. I did two wire experiments, the first of which was the first eight pictures. First, I twisted the two wires into different geometric shapes, and then immediately combined them into a three-dimensional shape. The six pictures on the right are the process of my second experiment. This time I chose a thicker wire and twisted it into a spiral. Then I wound it around, trying to make the sides bigger so that when I put on the stockings, the sides would be bigger. After that, I would use stockings to support faces of different shapes, which might help me develop geometric elements in the design. When I finished the wire, I put the stocking on it and stretched out a different shape of the face. The forms of these images are peculiar, the sources are natural, and there are no man-made signs. I think studying the shapes of these shapes can help me better in the future design development.
WEEK6 U12
This is my development, and these developments come from my conceptual development, which will determine the final form of my architecture.
I tried many times to combine different geometries.
I opened up the space divided along the dotted line, some of which could be expanded into three Spaces, others into four. These Spaces are spread out for the convenience of cleaners to take a short rest, and a good division of the use of each space area. I also tried to cut geometric shapes with lines, divide spaces with dashed lines, and develop flexible buildings that could be moved and split. Similarly, I chose a solar light source to highlight the light and dark sides of the building. In the end, I decided to use this figure to further develop 3d images. I think if this character is made into a building, its outline will be more creative and break it down into four different types of geometry.
WEEK7 U12
I am very happy with the results of the research I did because I thought it was very detailed and it helped me a lot throughout the project. I started with a rough floor plan to better understand what to add in each section.
This is my final floor plan, and I am happy with it. This is just one of them, because I will continue to separate them. My theme concept is to make a flexible building. My idol Tadao Ando once said that a good building should be combined with nature and become a spiritual building. So I plan to use cad to separate them and then modeling.
WEEK5 U12
This week I did a lot of primary research, many of which were photos I took during vacations and weekends. All my favorite architects. Especially zaha and IMP. These buildings amaze me. In doing these surveys, I also thoroughly understood the design concept of each building. I also learned many new knowledge points, such as parametric design, topological architecture, nonlinear design, etc. I think that the storage of this knowledge is critical to my future study career and work. This will be my personal understanding of the architecture, and I believe it will be a good start. Through the attention and investigation of architecture, I deeply thank them for their subconscious understanding of architecture and have a more professional understanding of various types of architecture. For example, I like Zaha Hadid’s architecture, so I did a lot of research on her architectural design. This knowledge is in my mind and expands my architectural knowledge. I think that with a deeper understanding of architecture, the next time I work on a project, I might try to brainstorm from such a large concept, rather than know nothing about this time when I develop the concept. I think the biggest gain is not what I look like this time, but that during each stage of research and investigation, my understanding of architecture has reached a new starting point. If I started to study and learn these things when I was founded, I believe it will lay the foundation for future learning.
